Excellence in perioperative nursing is a product of scholarship, evidence-based practices and dedicated service but cannot be achieved without focusing on the nurse’s own wellness. Today’s stressful surgical environment can cause of a lot of imbalances, thus affecting the health of perioperative nurses. Many times, nurses are so concerned about their patients that concern for themselves can suffer, thus resulting in decreased productivity, poor health and unhappiness. The nurse must learn to prioritize the importance of maintaining a healthy body, healthy mind/soul, healthy family, healthy society and healthy finances. This entertaining and informative presentation will highlight the secrets of achieving a balanced life so that excellence in perioperative nursing can be realized.


Kay Ball served as the AORN president 1992-1993 and is the author of “Lasers: The Perioperative Challenge” along with many chapters and articles on health care issues and policy.
