Surgical services staff are familiar with the “value-based purchasing” buzzword, but do they truly understand how to actively contribute to it? Value-based purchasing can no longer be regarded as solely a business phrase of concern only to leaders. As leaders, we must engage our staff and educate them to approach outcomes in a meaningful way. Claire Everson has been a perioperative RN since 1980, CNOR since 1982 and a perioperative educator since 1985. Involved with AORN at the local, state and national level she has served in many roles including AORN Board of Directors 2005-2009 and Nominating Committee 2010-2012. She is currently secretary of her chapter. She has contributed to nursing via journal articles and contributions to textbooks.
