7:30-8 AM Sign-in, continental breakfast

8-8:30 AM Introduction and overview

8:30-10:45 AM Patient Safety (Break 9:30-9:45 AM)

Course Objectives

  1. Describe elements of the Universal Protocol.

  2. Review pharmacology in the perioperative setting.

  3. Describe nursing interventions when assisting with anesthesia management.

  4. Discuss methods for preventing retained surgical items.

  5. Select measures to appropriately process tissue obtained during the operative/invasive procedure.

  6. Identify age-specific interventions to promote perioperative patient safety.

  7. Describe measures to decrease patient exposure to adverse events.

  8. Summarize infection prevention strategies.

10:45-11:45 AM Personnel Safety

Course Objectives

  1. Choose risk-reduction strategies to prevent staff injuries.

  2. Discuss hazards associated with smoke plume.

  3. Identify common electrical hazards encountered by staff in the perioperative setting.

  4. Implement strategies to address exposure to biohazardous materials.

  5. Examine risks associated with hazardous material exposure.

11:45 AM-1:30 PM Environment of Care (Lunch 12:15-1 PM)

Course Objectives

  1. Ensure the patient will have a clean perioperative environment.

  2. Document activities related to providing a safe environment of care.

  3. Choose appropriate storage methods for equipment and supplies.

  4. Recognize parameters required for a safe environment of care.

1:30-3 PM Instrument Processing

Course Objectives

  1. Assign Spaulding classifications to devices based on their intended use.

  2. List the steps in cleaning contaminated instruments, beginning at the point of use.

  3. Choose the correct method for disinfection of instruments.

  4. Apply principles of infection prevention to the storage of instrumentation.

  5. Identify special instrument processing needs to minimize risk of transmission of disease in select circumstances.

  6. Select the correct packaging method based on the instrument to be sterilized.

  7. Review current standards for assuring sterility of instruments.

3:00-3:15 PM Break

3:15-3:45 PM Arterial Blood Gases

Course Objectives

  1.  Calculate arterial blood gas values.

 3:45-4:30 PM Play Ball!!

 4:30-5 PM Q&A / Certificate distribution
